ocated in an Upcountry corner of York County, South Carolina, the past and present come face to face in The Tower Studio. You may see a Revolutionary War hero come to life, or just as easily see your Aunt Virginia take shape in a new color portrait. Devotion to detail here means being careful to ensure that both the correct button is on the general’s tunic and the correct blue is in Aunt Virginia’s eyes.

My historic work grows both from a love of the past and from living in an area soaked in history here in the Upstate. The Revolutionary War played its role in shaping life in South Carolina, and several key battles took place less than a day’s journey from here. My American Revolution page has portraits of combatants from both sides of the conflict, and  I attempt in my work to pay homage to early American portraitists like Charles Willson Peale, without whose fine work many of these early images would not exist.

While no pivotal battles from the 1860’s were fought nearby, the effects of the War Between the States are in evidence everywhere in South Carolina. I do very necessary research on military units and uniform designs to ensure accuracy in my Civil War paintings.

For my Contemporary commissions, I work either directly from life, from my own photographs or from the client’s photos. When I’ve finished the initial sketch on canvas, I submit it for approval before starting to paint. The client ultimately has final approval before the painting is finished.
